I loved this book. Actually only book I have liked from the author.********CAUTION POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD> PLEASE STOP NOW IF YOU DON"T WANT READ ANY SPOILERS>THANKS**********
The hero is on his fourth wife. They keep dying on him for various reasons, the last one was murder! He has liked them but never loved any of his wives. He keeps getting married because he is trying to get a male heir. If he does not get the male heir then his step son from his first wife will inherit his estate. As you read the story you will see why this is a big concern. His second wife gave him a daughter and his third wife gave him two daughters. He is desperate. So, he the way he gets his next wife is that he is able to extend marital contract from his last wife to include him marrying her younger sister. As you get to know the hero you realize he is just going through the motions of life. He liked his wives, the second being his favorite so far, but never really loved them. His wives have all been uncomfortable with marital relations and his last wife was kind of cold towards him. He really wants to have a warm loving relationship but is jaded at this point and has formed this irrational belief it will never happen because of some genetic reason. Being on his fourth wife he does not expect anything different so he starts things very cold. Just continuing his life like normal. Doesn’t expect anything different. Note however, that the only reason he even liked his 2nd wife more was because at least she would allow him to hug her at night and he misses that. Hero continues the motions of life through his fourth marriage. He pretty much has invested more energy into his military career than his personal. He rarely sees the children, even though he has good relationship with his older daughter. He is hard, strong and physically fit; but he is sexually frustrated and lonely.
As for the heroine she has had a crush on the hero since she first saw him. Actually more like feel in lust with him at first sight! Since she was the younger sister she has been overlooked all her life. Worst she has voluptuous curves that make her look big due to the left over clothing that is given to her by her older sister. She feels like a stuffed sausage in the clothing, so you can imagine how she might look. She is also described as drab and without any grace. Her father did not invests much into her and did not expect much from her. The father is described as hard core military man that invest more into military than his family. Since her cheap father did not want to lose money from the older sister, pretty much sells younger to the hero so no money is lost in the military movement they both fight for same side. The heroine is fine with that because she has hots for the hero. Unfortunately, hero starts off things very sadly due to his past experiences with his wives. Their first marital scene was downright pitiful. He just pretty much goes in and out, like Walmart Express. The poor horny heroine was like what the hell was that. However, she doesn’t know how to express her disappointment. So at first it is pretty stale and cold relationship. Hero continues as before and expects nothing to change. Pretty much continues to neglect his family and seeing them btw his military breaks to try and get heroine pregnant. The visits are short and impersonal. Sad to say that his older daughter pretty much has been raising herself and an appointed governess is pretty much raising his two youngest daughters. Heroine is young so she can't seem to find herself. She has never been trained to run a household so that is pretty much left to the housekeeper. Heroine is very young and scatterbrained. However, she has the needs of a woman that has the hots for her physically fit husband. She takes matters into her own hands and starts to make changes to get what she wants. She buys herself a full figure gown that makes the hero take notice of her as a woman. She starts following her passion for poetry and playwriting, forcing hero to help her with lines. She also starts taking more care of her appearances and forming her own band misfit friends. The turning point was when she decides to ambushing the hero in bed to get what she wants. She wants to touch the hero bad! Hero is now forced to reevaluate his way of thinking and comes to realize not all wives are the same. So he continues his military pursuits but starts to come home more often, pushing the boundaries in their physical relationship and getting to know the heroine as a person.
Oh let me tell you, the sexual scenes were few but boy were they hawt. I mean the love scenes alone are worth price of the book, in my opinion. I will say this heroine is obsessed with the hero. She fights to integrate herself more and more into his life. Her character is wonderful. She is impulsive, rush in, better say sorry later than ask permission, ditzy kind of gal. This personality is important because that is how she is able to do the things that get her to shape the hero to the man she wants in her life. She is one smart cookie let me tell you. Example of this is she starts taking birth control to stop self from having any babies. Oh no, she wants love and is going to get it before she gives the hero what he wants. She gets herself into some funny (shaking my head) issues that can be seen as kind of TSTL but I see them as part of her nature. I found them funny and goes with her character. The hero is way over his head. His orderly life is in chaos due to her refusal toe the line. As story goes the hero falls more and more in love with heroine. Just. The. Way. She Is. She becomes more than a brood mare to have his male heir. She keeps pushing her boundaries but that is what makes her endearing.
So my favorite part is the ending. The fight scene is followed by one of the best love declarations I have ever read. I mean you go girl! Make him stand notice and make him toe the line. I loved it! It was a lot of work to get to this point, but love when the heroine gets what she wants in the end. Highly recommend the book. Not light read, but beautiful written. One of my favorite top 10 books. I especially love going back and reading love scenes. Oh boy, they are well written. Not many of them and they are not super detailed but they get their point across. 5 star rating!

The Accidental Bride Bride Trilogy Jane Feather 9780553578966 Books Reviews
I read the three books in about a span of two weeks, all in order (this one being book two). This one was the best of the bunch.
I think Phoebe is an easy character to relate to. She doesn't have the perfect body, elegant grace, or ability to come up with smart dialogue. She's average. My difficulties with Phoebe are that she constantly throwing herself (physically and emotionally) at Cato and he continually dismisses her. He enjoys the sex they have, but doesn't seem to see her for much more, until the near end of the book. I think I would have much preferred a little more cat and mouse. After Phoebe's failed attempts to earn her husband's respect, I would have hoped she would had a little pride and backed off. I would have liked to have seen Cato try as hard as Phoebe to make the relationship work.
Cato is my favorite hero of the three books. He is honest and all around good. He is very detached, but has possibilities to become something greater, if given the right motivation. I don't feel that this character was developed enough to really see why in the end he decided to love Phoebe. It didn't look into the depths of his realization enough -- just on the surface, and it seemed shallow at best.
This book, I would consider, is an average read. Nothing great, but good enough if you are bored and can't find anything else better. It has moments that will make you smile, but it just needed a little more emotional connection.
I love cheesy romance novels, but please! Don't insult my intelligence.
I hate how it is historically inaccurate, how the characters are unbelievable, emotions - fake.
dropped it after 200 pages, I just couldn't take any more of the female lead falling/spilling stuff, helping the poor, trying to make her brother in law (now her husband) to fall in love with her.
I didn't even bother to understand the poor historical/political sub-story that was going on, who cares?
I wanted to like this book because Phoebe was not the physically perfect woman as is the case in so many romance novels. But the age difference really got in the way. Other reviewers say that Phoebe was 17 (and Cato was 37 and she was his fourth wife!!) but very far into the book Cato says she is 19 (probably just over 18 according to the dates given). Almost as if the author has realized that there is a problem and tries rather half heartedly to fix it. Why didn't Ms. Feather just start all three girls off a little older? Just a few years would have made a big difference. She could have even left Olivia at her original age and not caused any problems for Portia or Phoebe. As it was, I was very uncomfortable with Phoebe and Olivia being such close friends when one was the daughter and one the wife of the same man. And please, could Ms Feather not have at least given names to the two poor girls Cato produced with Diana? If that information was there then I missed it because it must have been given only once.
I very quickly lost patience with Phoebe always looking like a rag bag, always having rats nest hair, always having dirt on her face, always being defiant, always, always, always. As another reviewer said, why couldn't she get a little back bone and stop her relentless pursuit of Cato. Did she only feel humiliation for mere seconds? Any normal woman wouldn't have spoken to him (or allowed him to touch her) for a week.
Cato did change. But, wow, did he ever inflict verbal punishment every chance he had. It took so long for his attitude to change toward Phoebe that I had almost given up hope. And then he changed completely. Almost too much too late. At least for me.
I would not recommend this book to a friend. If you decide to read it, you will do so with lots of information given through the review system and know what you are letting yourself in for. I will NOT be reading the other two books!!!
I loved this book. Actually only book I have liked from the author.
