Mace of the Apocalypse is a totally unique zombie book in my view. My rating wavered between a 4 and a 5 - read below and you can decide for yourself...The book starts with Mace and his partner Jade. They are a couple who are also bounty hunters out on a run to catch a guy with a purple mohawk who is suppose to be getting of a train in a BART station in San Francisco. Jade is at the top of the station in case Mace misses him and Mace is waiting below for him to get off the train.
Meanwhile, on the train itself, there is a foreign man with a vase of flowers and a pretty red balloon with a strange symbol on it. He is sweating and drawing attention although most of it is all smiles, thinking he is nervous about his upcoming romantic encounter. One gang banger though is suspicious because he had heard on the news earlier that several terrorist plots were stopped in NYC that involved the same strange symbol on the balloon so he is going to be a hero and stop the guy. He goes in for the kill - unfortunately, the terrorist pops the balloon, releasing the poison, everyone on the train dies, and turns into rage filled killers.
Mace sees the purple mohawk guy and is going in to arrest him when he hears all the screams - of course, purple hair guy gets eaten before Mace can get to him and all turns to chaos. Mace runs from the station to meet up with Jade and meets up with the first of the survivors that he gathers along the run to safety. Along the way, they find out that they have the "cure" and go to a hospital to manufacture more to share with others. Several characters I wanted to backhand and feed them to the infected myself - Mace is a better person than I am because I would have shoved them off the bus... warning - don't come looking for me in the event of a zombie apocalypse because I am not as nice as these people :-)
If you are looking for gore and continued killing of the infected and the "normal" type zombie book, then you will be disappointed for this book is something entirely different. In fact, except for the first part of the book when they are escaping to the hospital where they will set up their "safe place", there are very few encounters with the infected. You also don't have all the "runs for supplies or food" and the "raiders preying on the weak" and the plot lines that you usually find in zombie books.
Instead, this book is about the survivors and how finding themselves in this situation effects their personalities and relationships - especially among the teenagers. It is a very interesting twist - how would your 16 yr old son react if you and your spouse were killed in front of him? How would your 12 yr old handle a world without supervision (because you had no family left and the rest of the adults were busy making antidotes and taking care of the shelter?) and how would they handle the peer pressure and a world where everything was theirs for the taking? What would you do if you were a non violent adult with "secrets" that you weren't acceptable in the "normal" world and now there is no one to stop you?
That is the focus of the book and made for a great read. Parts of it were unpleasant to read but very realistic and made you think.
The main characters were developed nicely, especially Mace. The author gave a great understanding of what drove Mace, of what he was thinking, of his weaknesses, and of his strengths. It was nice to see - not just a "super hero type" who is going to save everyone but a man who is learning as he goes. I wanted to cry with him over the loss of one character and I felt his loss of faith right along with him. His talks with the Father (his elderly mentor who is a Priest and one of my favorite characters) were refreshing - not preachy, realistic.. You really feel his anguish and his joy as well.
We didn't get to learn as much detail about Jade but since there is a sequel in which she is the main character coming out in October, I am assuming the author will do the same for Jade as he did for Mace in this story.
I recommend this book for a great change in pace from the normal zombie book and for the fact that it will make you think not about how to get food and guns to survive but how it will affect a group that normally isn't talked about - the orphaned children..

Mace of the Apocalypse eBook Daniel J Williams Catt Dahman Rachel Dooley Reviews
The story takes place in San Fransisco and starts out with Mace and his partner Jade going after a bail jumper. They are both bounty hunters and also romantically involved. The apocalypse begins on a train when a terrorist releases a powdery substance that immediately turns a human into a crazed...killer! When the train stops at the station all those affected on the train are set loose on the unsuspecting public waiting to board and that is when all Hell breaks loose and the virus is spread throughout the city. Mace...Jade and a few of the other characters who are important to the story join together and seek a safe place to hole up until they can form a plan on what to do and where to go to ride out the outbreak...also hoping to be rescued. So much takes place from when the terrorist releases that fateful substance to the turning of the last page I couldn't read fast enough to find out what happened next. I have to say that this is a very exciting story...laid out so well and so full of action...not just with the characters being chased by the infected and trying to find safety but also with another group that is set on taking over and being the leaders in a world that has gone crazy. There are so many questions I had in my mind while reading this and they were all answered along the way at one point or another. Mr. Williams is indeed a top notch story teller who keeps the reader on the edge of their seat with hair raising scenes. I caught myself yelling out loud at the characters to "Watch out" or "Look out" so many times because the descriptions as to what was happening were so realistic. I am so looking forward to starting the second book in this series to find out where the people that survived in Mace of the Apocalypse will end up! If you are a fan of zombie stories then I definitely recommend this story to you. It is one of the best ones I have ever read. Thank you Daniel J. Williams for such an exciting and enjoyable story. You now have a new...faithful fan!
