So many have written so much about Shelby Foote, this book, and his other works that I feel no need to wax lyrical on his behalf. If you enjoy an excellent read that is neither simplistic, condescending, nor overly intricate yet complete, then you will love this book from cover to cover as i have.
There are two schools regarding Mr. Foote and his view of the Civil War. Those for and those not so much. I personally enjoy his take on things. In my study of the war I am most focused on the Gettysburg battle. This book starts with an over-view of how they got to Gettysburg and then an insightful look at the three days of the battle. I found the first part of the book a bit hard to get into but enjoyed it greatly when he got to Gettysburg. I am a fan.
He wrote so wonderfully it difficult to write about him. The book is wonderful. You pour a glass of wine, or coffee and join with him in a conversation. If you’re smart you’ll sit, sip your elixir and keep your trap shut. Just listen my friend to expertly crafted sentences about a time we can only wonder about. I’d read nursery rhymes written by Mr. Foote. I have his HUGE books he wrote with an old fashioned dip pen. All three of the series, probably every other book too. My goodness. I tried to write one page with a dip pen. A single piece of binder paper nearly put my hand out of commission. The only thing I can say if you want to go on a wonderful ride to that era, go with Shelby. Bon Voy-agge.
I am a woman who is not obsessed with the detail of every battle of the Civil War (or any other war). In fact, I'm also a Quaker with an aversion to the whole glorification of fighting.

But I do love history, and this book is so beautifully written, and does a such magnificent job of both explaining the battle itself and providing human context for the pivotal decisions that were made that I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in learning about the most important three days in American history without getting bogged down in swamps of meaningless detail. I make a point of reading it every year or two on July 1, and it gets better every time through.
First I'll just state that the only reason I'd not rated this book a 5 star read is because I've read several books on Gettysburg, and the Civil War, so there wasn't much new information here (Foote's three volume treatment of the war was phenomenal and I highly recommend it if you've not read that!). That said, I'm a huge fan of Shelby Foote's work. His way of story telling is such that it makes you feel as though you're sitting in his living room, and can almost hear his voice as you read. He also brings things down to a more personal level with each of the players in the story and humanizes them, rather than simply delivering a recitation of the battle strategy and outcomes. Overall, this was a quick and easy read, and very enjoyable. Wish Mr. Foote was still with us so we could look to more from him!
This book is like reading a movie. Shelby Foote puts you in the battle with the perspective of the men who fought. I've read many books about Gettysburg and they usually get bogged down in details that are hard to keep up with. Foote keeps the battle and the people in context that is understandable and also a human understanding of what it was like to be in such a large and horrific fight. This is the perfect book to read before you read any others, you come away with a wonderful understanding of the battle as a whole and then are able to see how and why the generals and the common soldier made the decisions they made and what they saw from the where they were on the ground. Read this before you go to Gettysburg or read any other Gettysburg books. Marvelous book!

The only thing better than the book is listening to Mr. Foote read it himself. I've got the tapes but would buy in yet another format if it were available on CD.
Gettysburg with a focus on the movements and battle experiences of the Army of Northern Virginia. For instance, Chamberlain's desperate bayonet charge made by the 20th Maine at Little Round Top, popularized by many writers, is here simply referred to in passing while focusing on the experience of the Alabamians who were attacking up the slope. Excellently written with a graceful narrative and smooth progression through this well known battle. I particularly liked Foote's detailing of Confederate casualties, painting a vivid picture of the toll in officers and men that resulted from this battle. Very accessible reading for non-CW buffs and the general public.
